Technical Guide: Selecting the Right Refractory Material for Your Application
Selecting the appropriate refractory material for a specific industrial application requires careful consideration of multiple factors including operating temperature, chemical environment, mechanical stress, and thermal cycling conditions.
Temperature Requirements: The first consideration is the maximum operating temperature. For applications below 1300 degrees C, standard alumina-silica castables are typically sufficient. For temperatures between 1300-1600 degrees C, high-alumina products or mullite-based materials are recommended. For extreme temperatures above 1600 degrees C, corundum or magnesia-based products are required.
Chemical Environment: The chemical nature of the process environment is equally important. Acidic environments require silica-based or alumina-silica refractories, while alkaline environments demand magnesia or chrome-containing products.
